Frederick George Holyer (1919-1989) in WW2

Anthony Gerada sent through a newspaper article concerning the exploits of his uncle Fred Holyer in the Second World War. He served on HMS Gurkha in the Narvik episode in 1940.

Interesting thing I noticed when I read further about the demise of the HMS Gurkha was that it was the first British destroyer to be sunk by air attack.

A great account by Frederick Holyer (1919-1989) of the attack, the drama and the mayhem. Fred was aboard and was rendered a paraplegic in the action. He lived on to tell the story via his love of art and the paintings he made of the Gurkha and other warships he came across. His brother Harold and father (also Fred Holyer) all served in the Royal Navy in WWll. His dad and my grandfather (Frederick Holyer) was also a musician and the band-master aboard the HMS Cyclops. The only physical momento I have from him being his band-master's baton which I treasure dearly.
